Sara's Marathon Mission!

Welcome to my page!

I've recently accepted the challenge of raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a member of the Team in Training Program. My goal is to raise $4,500 and to complete the Honolulu Marathon (yep, all 26.2 miles!) in December, 2001.

I am running in honor of Sandra Hitchcock, who has battled multiple myeloma since 1993. Unfortunately, she has recently learned that she is out of remission, and will have to go through another round of chemotherapy and drug therapy.

Team in Training is the largest endurance training program in the United States. Here's how it works...

Volunteers like me sign up to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and in exchange receive the coaching, training and travel opportunities in order to complete a marathon, century ride, or triathlon (and believe me, I can use all the coaching I can get...my background in sprinting means my idea of a distance run is the two lap warm-up before the 100 meter dash!).

But seriously, I know that this is a very worthy cause and am ready for the challenge!

Did you know:

* Leukemia is responsible for the death of more children than any other disease.

* Leukemia and lymphoma are the leading fatal cancers in young men and women, under 35, in the U.S.

* The overall survival rate has more than doubled in the last 30 years from 15% in 1965 to 40% in 1990 because of extensive investment in research!
